The region around Iłowa is especially fascinating for World War II history buffs.

One major highlight is Stalag Luft III in Żagań — the site of the famous Great Escape on the night of 24–25 March 1944, when 80 Allied prisoners tunneled their way out. There’s even a 1963 Hollywood movie about this event!

Fun fact: Most escapees were British — which is why the Top Gear crew visited Żagań and filmed an episode there in 2022! 🎥For proof, click here 😉

There are local wineries, mountains close enough for hiking, and even Tropical Islands — a giant indoor water park near Berlin — perfect for a fun day trip.
